Despite claims that it couldn’t, Holbeach is now set to light its beacon along with the rest of UK to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The Royal Observer Corps Association had been told due to safety concerns it couldn’t carry join the rest of the country in lighting a beacon to commemorate the end of World War II at 9.30pm on May 8.
But it has now got the all clear to do so.
“This historic site has brought our community together since it was first lit in 1988,” said Tony Topliss, the chair of the Holbeach branch of the Royal Observer Corps Association. “We believe that we can’t let our town miss out on this significant occasion.
“We’ve been in touch with the South Holland District Council, and an expert has confirmed that the site is safe.”
The Royal Observer Corps Association is now looking to fundraise to afford the insurance and toilet facilities involved as it says it’s not working with Holbeach Parish Council as it usually does.
That authority had said two weeks ago that the beacon ‘is not in a fit state’ and that ‘it is apparent that it will not be ready in time for May 8’.
However, it’s owned and maintained by South Holland District Council which said it had ‘no concerns’ but that it would reinspect it.
The Corps now say the district council has given it the go-ahead to hold an event lighting the beacon off Wignal’s Gate on May 8.
“The decision from Holbeach Parish Council not to participate in lighting the landmark on VE Day is disheartening,” Mr Topliss said. “To make this celebration possible, we’re reaching out to the public for support.
“We aim to create a memorable evening filled with music, games and refreshments leading up to the lighting ceremony.
“Any contribution you can make will go directly towards event costs like insurance, equipment and facilities. Let’s ensure that Holbeach shines bright on May 8, honouring our past together.”

When Holbeach Parish Council previously announced the beacon couldn’t be lit, the authority said it was holdings own event to take place in Holbeach at the same time.
It has confirmed that will continue to go ahead.
A parish council spokesman said: “We are holding our event in Carter’s Park from 5pm to 10pm.
“We will be lighting lamps of peace at 9.30pm. If the public wish to attend both events then that will be encouraged.
“We only found out that the beacon had been inspected after the ROCA had been given consent to light it.”
