Concern over condition of war memorial

The best way to clean Spalding’s War Memorial is being looked in to after concerns over its upkeep were raised at a meeting.

At last week’s Spalding Town Forum meeting, Coun Rob Gibson asked about the condition of the original monument based in Ayscoughfee Gardens.

Emily Spicer, South Holland District Council’s place manager, said: “We are aware that there does need to be some delicate cleaning of the memorial but it’s slightly difficult as it’s a listed building.

“We’re working through how we can do that sensitively without rubbing it all away.”

Coun Angela Newton expressed her concern that an offer to do the clean for free on social media channels had not been followed up and councillors offered to look into it.

The meeting’s chair Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, said: “Works need to be timely.

“It’s always been a bit uncomfortable on Remembrance Sunday when we’ve looked at the item and felt that something should have been done before then so this is probably not a bad time to remind ourselves as councillors that we need to look at it.”

Coun Gibson responded to the meeting: “Let’s hope it’s sorted before this November.”
