Community plan for former chapel

A former Methodist chapel in Spalding could be turned into a new centre for the community.

The St Thomas’s Road chapel was bought by the next-door St Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church following a donation by a parishioner.

The Methodist Church itself had already moved to Broad Street.

In what they’re calling Project St Thomas those at St Norbert’s had initially looked at turning the building into a nursery, but are now looking to make it into a community space.

It’s also looking at possibly working with the Changing Places consortium which looks to create public changing facilities for those that may not have toilet and showering facilities.

A public consultation being held alongside Lincolnshire County Council is due to be held today (Thursday, February 6) on the ideas St Norbert’s has for the venture.

It takes place at 2pm and 7pm and local residents are being urged to come along and see the outline plans the church has for the building built in 1857.

A spokesman for St Norbert’s church said: “This is the first public consultation; we felt that it was fair and proper that we should consult with our immediate neighbours in the very first instance.

“Further consultations are being planned for local organisations, businesses, other providers and the general public.

“The parish have been working on this project for two years.

“Originally it was intended that we would use the building to create a nursery, but were soon alerted to the potential the building offers to the wider community.

“We are still in the early stages of planning. Nothing will be set in stone until we have explored all the options available to us.”
