Danny Clifton is refusing to throw in the towel in Holbeach United’s bid to stave off relegation from the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North this season – but admits there could be a positive to going down.
The Tigers have yet to win a game in any competition so far this season and Saturday’s 3-2 loss to nearest rivals Selston left them 12 points from safety with as many games left to play.
It would take a remarkable turn of events for Holbeach, who have been mainstays of the UCL’s top tier for numerous decades, to stay up this season.
But Clifton, who always has a positive outlook, is determined to turn things around at Carter’s Park in the long term…whatever happens this season.
“I’m not a defeatist,” insisted the Tigers boss. “But of course, we have to face facts and accept relegation is a distinct possibility.
“We’re changing tact a little and having another go at getting some experienced lads to come in and help. Whether that works or not, I don’t know.
“We want to stay up, of course we do. But whatever happens, we need to build for next season.
“There are positives to going down if it happens. The young lads we have here will have the chance to develop their abilities and mentality.
“If we have to take one step back, we could take two steps forward and come back up with a winning mentality.
“Whatever happens, it’s clear to me that we need some experienced heads to join the young talent we have.”
Next up for Holbeach is a home game against 13th-placed Heanor Town, who are coming fresh off the back of a big 4-0 victory at high-flying Boston Town, on Saturday (3pm)
The Tigers did manage a draw at Heanor back at the start of the season and, along with Pinchbeck United (twice), are one of the two sides they’ve managed to take a point from.
Clifton was hoping to have as many as 19 players at training this week – meaning he should have a strong squad for the Carter’s Park clash.
