Cliff stands tall to help Sutton to sixth win in row

Long Sutton Men 1st 7
City of Peterborough 3rd 1

Despite a huge home win, it was goalkeeper James Cliff who took the man of the match honours.
He pulled off some outstanding saves keeping out quick breakaways as a result of the high Sutton press to help his team to a sixth consecutive victory.
A short corner provided the first goal of the game, slotted home by Josh Fyson. He added a second and when Josh Baker’s perfect ball set up McKenzie East, it was 3-0.
The visitors pulled one back before East doubled his total to open a 4-1
half-time lead. Fyson completed his hat-trick and East them claimed his first senior treble with Baker adding the seventh with a clever
two-touch finish.

A dominant start saw Sutton’s front five of Luke Jackson, Alex Canham, Eddie Hales, Dan Plant and Troy Croxford on fire and it was not a question of if Sutton would score but when. That was answered in the 11th minute when a short corner won by Jackson saw a clean injection from Ed White and a sharp finish by Stef Fox.
Resolute defending from Ben Hales, Tom Baguley and Si Clarke, along with some fine saves from Alfie Braginton prevented a Peterborough revival.
The second half started in the same fashion as the first with free-flowing attacks and multiple chances coming the way of the Green Army.
From a short corner, the ball bobbled back to Canham and he rocketed a shot into a defender’s foot on the line to win a penalty stroke – which was dispatched with aplomb to double the lead.
Peterborough tried to break forward but from one of their attacks, Sutton broke quickly when Baguley sent the ball straight to man of the match Canham on the halfway line. He collected the ball before sending it on its way for Plant to complete the scoring with seven minutes.
Hales was then given his marching orders for a strong missed tackle.

Gary Croxford was man of the match in Sutton men’s third team’s 3-0 defeat at Bourne Deeping 3rd.
Sutton Ladies’ first team suffered a 5-0 defeat at home to City of Peterborough 2nd. Amelia Norey won the player of the match award.
