Champions Ayscoughfee sign off sensational season in style

Ayscoughfee Bowls Club closed a successful season in style when they lifted the inaugural Champion of Champions EBF trophy.

The match was arranged by the Peterborough and District Bowls League and consisted of their region’s league winners, Whittlesey Manor, taking on Spalding and District League winners Ayscoughfee.

The match was played at Market Deeping Bowls Club – and a number of spectators turned up for what proved to be a hard fought encounter.

Ayscoughfee found themselves narrowly ahead after five ends of the 18-end contest, leading on all three rinks.

By halfway, they had stretched their advantage to a ten-shot lead, which Whittlesey just couldn’t peg back as Ayscoughfee ran out 53-41 winners.

Wins on the three rinks came from Paul, Nigel and Allan Cherry (17-14), Tony Gowing, Chris Mycock and Chris Warboys (15-14) and Nigel Brown, Paul Caress and Jordan Philpott (21-13).

The trophy was supplied by the Peterborough League and presented by the President of the Spalding League, Maxine Rawet, to Ayscoughfee’s team captain Paul Caress.

Also presented to each Spalding player was an engraved glass as a memento of the occasion.

This was the first game of its type. Next year, it is hoped that additional leagues will be invited to supply their champions to contest the trophy.
