CCTV calls over allotment thefts

An allotment holder who has been hit by thefts at his allotment says more should be done to stop criminals.

Peter Salmons said just six weeks ago 11 of those with allotments at Horseshoe Road in Spalding had items stolen.
He was then frustrated to find a shed he had on the site had been broken into on July 25, and equipment including a petrol lawn mower and an air gun taken.
“Nobody wants to know,” he told The Voice. “The criminals used padlock cutters to get into my shed.
“I’ve asked the council to put up cameras, but they’re not doing anything.
“They say there’s no electricity to do that, but you can get cameras that run off solar power.
“The police too don’t want to know.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police confirmed it had ended investigations into the July 25 theft.
Coun Jack Tyrrell, South Holland District Council’s portfolio holder for environmental services, said: “We are sorry to hear of the issues Mr Salmons has been having at his allotment site on Horseshoe Road.
“When a plot is first rented out an allotment holder is advised not to keep any valuable items on site and any security is the responsibility of the allotment holder.
“Our parks and grounds team have introduced perimeter gates with locks to allotment sites across the district.
However, the team is not able to provide a security service.
“Whilst this is a regrettable situation, allotment-related thefts are not a regular occurrence in South Holland.
“At this particular site, there is no power supply making the introduction of CCTV cameras unfeasible at present.
“We would therefore encourage any allotment owners who have noticed suspicious activity or have been the victim of a crime, to report this to Lincolnshire Police who will be able to assist further.”
