Care homes are blooming busy

It’s been a busy few weeks for residents living at care homes owned by Tanglewood, including them getting their knitting needles out for next year’s Spalding Flower Parade.

The Tanglewood team plan to help decorate a float with thousands of knitted, crocheted, or sewn flowers made by residents and staff.

All members of the community can knit for the project with the homes Cedar Falls in Spalding and Holbeach Meadows in Holbeach dedicated drop off points for flowers made in the community.

Both promise a cuppa and slice of cake for anyone making woolly floral deliveries.

Holbeach Meadows is off to a good start with flowers created by super knitter and housekeeper Kerry Newstead with many more in the pipeline.

All Tanglewood care homes will be supporting the event through their Knit and Knatter and craft groups.

If anyone would like to volunteer to run a group, they would be happy to hear from you and thank you in advance.

Susan Wilson, deputy manager at Cedar Falls said: “Cedar Falls is beyond excited at the return of the Spalding Flower Parade.

“This event was an exciting part of our childhood, teenage years and also as adults when we took our own children along to see the amazing floats.

“We feel honoured that we will be part of the procession in May 2023, it’s wonderful to part of something so special.”

Debbie Holman, home manager at Holbeach Meadows, said: “We are overjoyed to be included in next year’s flower parade which promises to be a momentous occasion.

“At Holbeach Meadows we have started knitting and pledge not to stop until we have enough flowers to dress our float, with the support of our friends and neighbours of course. The Spalding Flower Parade is truly a community event.”

Other recent activities at the home include a visit from the Virtual Dementia Bus to Holbeach Meadows.

Operated by Training 2 Care, staff took advantage of its equipment which provides those with a healthy brain some concept of what it may be like to live with dementia.

“This provided staff with some insight into the daily challenges and frustrations faced by people living with the condition,” Mrs Holman said.

Meanwhile, residents and the team at Cedar Falls Care Home in Spalding were surprised with ice creams all round when the Zayann’s Ices van pulled up in the car park.

The delicious treat had been organised by Activities Coordinators Sharon Kendall and Sapphire Malcolm as part of the home’s beach week.
