Bulb giveaway starts celebration

A Spalding institution is looking to kick off its 60th anniversary celebrations by handing out free bulbs this coming weekend.

In 2026 the Springfields Horticultural Society is marking six decades of improving horticultural and floral design in the area.

You could join in the celebrations by picking up the free bulbs, growing them on and entering the blooms it into a daffodil competition set to take place on April 11 next year.

“We’re delighted to be able to share these bulbs with our local community,” said Marion Durose, CEO of the Springfields Horticultural Society charity. “It couldn’t be simpler – plant them in a pot covered with compost and keep it moist but not wet or pop them in your garden at a depth twice the size of the bulb.

“Then just wait till spring to see those leaves pushing through the soil, followed by those beautiful yellow trumpet flowers that signal brighter days ahead.

“Young or more senior, new to gardening or a bit of a Monty Don – give it a go.

“It’s all about having fun and celebrating what we can grow together.”

The bulbs will be handed out at the Springfields Festival Gardens which the society maintains for free for the community to enjoy.

A society spokesman said: “Whether you’ve got a window box, a back garden, or just a pot on your doorstep, everyone’s invited to pop down and pick up some bulbs.

“And as the saying goes ‘when they are gone, they are gone’!

“As we look ahead to six decades of serving Lincolnshire’s bulb industry and gardening enthusiasts, this weekend’s bulb giveaway is just the beginning of the anniversary celebrations.”
