Bowlers blitz Boston in super Long Sutton success as Stanway takes fine figures of 4-28

A brilliant bowling performance helped Long Sutton defeat Boston in a low-scoring classic in South Lincs and Border League Premier Division on Saturday.

Sutton, who have struggled for form in recent weeks, were put into bat at Paradise Field after losing the toss and slumped to 124 all out.

But super spells from Barry Stanway (4-28), Jake Burton (3-31) and Rob Simpson (3-14) turned the game on its head and saw Boston collapse to 103 in reply, giving Sutton a 21-run triumph.

Sutton’s innings lasted just 29 overs, with Jamie Taylor (8) the first man to go.

Alastair Drohan (5), Adam Wright (12), Josh Baker (12) and Tim Norris (10) also went cheaply as they found themselves in hot water at 58-5.

Thankfully for the hosts, Stanway (25) and Charlie Crisp (12) put on 43 for the sixth wicket – with the help of some of the 27 extras conceded by the visitors.

Once that partnership ended with the score on 101, Sutton’s last few wickets tumbled around skipper Burton, who ended up seven not out.

Boston also struggled with the bat, but their top order was blow away by Stanway as he got rid of four of the top five in Ben Troops (16), Scott Elleray (5), Rowan Evans (3) and Mahir Yousuff (0).

Matt Hood (17) and Luke Gilding (22) both hung around as they bid to grind a win out, but both fell to the spin of Burton.

Burton also got Jack Tetther (4), but it was then left to fellow spinner Simpson to clean up the tail with Martin Hodgson (7) the final man out.

Sutton, who took 16 match points from the derby duel, are now sixth in the table and they are on the road to face rock-bottom Billingborough this Saturday (1pm).

  • Down in Division Two, Long Sutton 2nd were also on the winning trail as they defeated hosts Freiston 2nd by three wickets.

The home side batted first and were dismissed for 153 in 39.3 overs, as Sutton’s Milly Hastings starred with fine figures of 3-23. Ben Newton (58) was the star man for Freiston before falling to Hastings.

Sutton impressed in their reply, making a watchful 154-6 in 42 overs.

Dom Clay (30) and Oliver Taylor (25) gave the visitors impetus at the top of the order, while Jack Smith (17 not out) guided them home.

Next up for Sutton 2nd are Uffington at home on Saturday (1pm).
