Boston walkers hand newly-formed South Lincs Steelers a pair of derby defeats

Newly-formed South Lincs Steelers Walking FC suffered two narrow friendly defeats against Peterborough and District over-50s champions Boston United Community last week.

The first match was played by the over-45 team. This was a highly competitive game which was at 0-0 for over three quarters of the game until the Spalding-based Steelers were awarded a penalty, which James Scaife tucked into the bottom right-hand corner giving the keeper no chance.

Boston equalised minutes later from a well taken free kick and then scored a winner after an error at the back, sealing a 2-1 triumph.

The second game was played by the over-60s – which was the first time an over-60s team from the area had ever played a competitive game of walking football.

The match was a very close affair and the Steelers had large amounts of possession but were unfortunate to give away a penalty which Boston duly dispatched.

As the game wore on the Steelers were unlucky not to equalise through shots from Phil Cooper and Peter Paget.

Boston then took a 2-0 lead after a save from the keeper took an unfortunate rebound off the post and into the goal.

The Steelers pushed again for a late goal but good defending from Boston meant that the game finished at 2-0.

The Steelers would like to thank Boston for two great games and look forward to many more. Their first matches Chromasport Peterborough & District over-50s Walking Football League are next up on October 25.

  • If anybody would like to join the Steelers’ training sessions, they are held at Glen Park, Surfleet on Mondays (5.45pm). All ages, genders and abilities welcome.
