Brett Whaley admits that it’s time for him to make a few changes at Spalding United after questioning the attitude of some of his players.
The new Tulips chief, who has now overseen back-to-back defeats, reckons that he’s seen enough to know changes are needed after just four games in charge.
Whaley wants to add a bit more character to his squad and thinks a number of his current players haven’t got the stomach for the fight of climbing the table and then launching a promotion charge next season.
“I think what I’ve seen from the four games is that some of the players aren’t going to buy into what I want to do here,” said Whaley. “I’m very much of the opinion that, if you can’t win a game, don’t lose it.
“When the going gets tough in a game, you need those characters in the team that will dig in and fight. What I’ve seen so far is that we have lots of players with talent, but a few who don’t want to dig in.
“I’ll make no secret of my desire to bring a few new players in, we need more characters in this squad.
“Maybe we won’t have new players this weekend, but I’d hope to have a few new faces in next week.
“I’m not talking about wholesale changes, but something has to change.
“We’ll also look to loan a few out for game time and we’ll hopefully have more competition for places, which is key.”
Spalding are looking to end their two-game losing run in Pitching In NPL Midlands Division on Saturday (3pm), when they play host to a Sporting Khalsa side that sit in ninth place – three places and eight points higher than them.
Whaley is expecting a tough game, but does have left back Jack Lynch available again after injury.
The Tulips boss added: “Khasla are a very good side and they play very good football.
“If we’re sloppy in possession, we’ll not get it back for a while.
“Every game we’ve been involved with has been close, but we need to do more on Saturday.
“It’s the hardest game we’ll have played since I took over and the performance will need to be a lot better than it was at Daventry in the last game.”
Tulips fans should get their first look at new signing Archie Jones, who made his debut at Daventry after joining on loan from Bishops Stortford last week.
