Boss Whaley feels his Spalding United side could flourish on Bedworth’s 3G pitch

Spalding United boss Brett Whaley admits his side face a different kind of test when they visit fellow mid-table side Bedworth United on Saturday (3pm).

Just one point separates the sides in tenth and 11th places in the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division table, with neither able to mount the play-off push they may have hoped for.

The Warwickshire-based hosts are a tough nut to crack given that they play on a 3G pitch, but Whaley admits that his side are looking forward to playing on the pristine surface.

“We’ve had a really hard run of games against the leading sides,” said the Spalding chief. “We’ve also had some great results against some of those top teams.

“We know that we can be solid and make things hard for teams, but this is another game where we can look to play some football.

“We’ve got some good technical players in the side and they will be able to show what they are made of.

“Yes, it’s a mid-table game and you’d expect that neither side has much to play for at this stage of the season.

“We certainly want to finish as high as we can, but it’s natural that there will be less pressure involved in this kind of fixture than there would be against sides fighting at the top and bottom.”

Whaley has no new injury concerns ahead of the trip, but is still without Ben Starkie (international duty with Tanzania) and top scorer Jordan Macleod, who is with Step SIx side Bourne Town.

They hope to have defender Jack Withers back, though.
