Big step towards new hospital

A major step has been taken in the building of a new hospital in King’s Lynn.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has bought land to the north of the current site which will be used for a contractor compound during the new build.

Once the new hospital is completed, the 90 acres of land will be used to help biodiversity and provide low-carbon energy.

“The purchase of this land is an important step in the preparations for our new hospital. It strengthens our readiness for the next phases of the new QEH programme by putting the practical foundations in place, while also supporting our long-term ambitions for sustainability and innovation across the site,” said Peter Cox, project director for the New QEH.

The £1.5 billion project will see a new main building constructed on the current main car park and work on a new multi-storey car park will start in July.

The hospital was constructed using Reinforced Autoclave Aerated Concrete (RAAC) which wasn’t designed to last as long as it has.

Many areas of the existing building have seen hundreds of roof props installed.

The new hospital will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the estates department to automate operations such as energy use and maintenance/

There will be bedside touchscreen devices for entertainment and environmental controls for patients. They will also include staff access to patient records and clinical systems.

The new multi-storey car park will have 1,335 spaces and replaces the current car park although additonal spaces will be retained. It will run a pay-as-you-exit system.
