Bid to bring back parade

An Army veteran has taken on the running of Holbeach Parish Council’s Remembrance Sunday parade for 2022

The authority cancelled the usual 2021 parade, citing a lack of volunteers coming forward by a set deadline as a reason.

That caused outrage around the town and led to veterans’ fundraiser Harold Payne, of the Anglia Motel, Fleet Hargate, organising a parade instead.

The parish council has once again vowed to hold its usual afternoon parade and service and former army veteran Coun Rick Stevens has taken on the organisation alongside Coun Mark Murfit.

“I served in the RAOC (Royal Army Ordnance Corp) as a petroleum operator and was responsible for bulk refuelling of vehicles, helicopters and aircraft during the Falklands conflict,” Coun Stevens said. “I also served in Germany, Cyprus, the UK and Hong Kong.”

A spokesman for the parish council, said: “Holbeach Parish Council is committed to organising a remembrance parade this year for our veterans and the public and our events committee has two new members to help us achieve this.

“We have already applied for our road closure, and we have the marshals to cover the event.

“We would like to work with all interested parties, anyone who wants to help with the organising contact clerk on [email protected] or call 01406 426739.
