Benjamin’s blessing for new bookshop

Poet, author and actor Benjamin Zephaniah was on hand to launch a new community bookshop in Holbeach last week.

The Holbeach Bookshop on Park Road is being run by volunteers to provide the town with a supply of second-hand books.

The brainchild of Rev Kate Plant, curate at All Saints, is currently applying for charity status and the five-person committee overseeing the venture says any profits will be passed on to good causes in the town.

Carolyn Boardman and husband Brian are two of the committee having previously owned similar bookshops in Scotland and the Lake District.

“The bookshop is run by the community for the community,” Carolyn said. “The books we sell have been donated and the donations are still coming in.

“We’ve had a fantastic reception from the people of Holbeach including some financial donations.

“One anonymous donor even gave us £100.”

The shop has been open five weeks now and has already shifted more than 700 books, which Carolyn described as “brilliant”.

The shop’s official opening came on Tuesday, October 16 and the visit of Benjamin.

He signed copies of his book and spoke about the importance of bookshops.

“It was wonderful,” Carolyn continued. “He was very impressed with what we’ve done and said he loves Holbeach and really likes coming into the shops here.”

The Holbeach Book Shop is open 12pm to 4pm, every day except Wednesdays and Sundays.
