Battery park for Spalding?

A planning application for a huge battery storage park at Spalding’s power station was due to be discussed yesterday.

The application by Spalding Energy Park Ltd would see the construction of a 550 megawatt storage system.
Spalding Energy Park would include batteries housed in containers, enclosures, control and protection systems.
The Spalding Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would connect to the National Grid at the Spalding North substation and would take energy from the grid during low demand and feed it back at peak times.
Most of the site involved in the application was part of the Spalding Energy Expansion site. Consent originally was for a combined, cycle gas turbine which is not going to be constructed.
The site would be an unmanned operation with continuous monitoring and inspections.
There shouldn’t be any vehicle movements as a result of the development.
The facility would store power equivalent to the annual electricity use of 177 homes.
Conditions for permission include a Section 106 agreement for financial contributions towards cycleways, footways, apprenticeships and town centre improvements with biodiversity enhancement.
The application says an initial £`17,600 plus £9,600 on the first and second anniversaries of work starting.
Members of the planning committee were recommended to approve the application.
