Ayscoughfee take the top title on enjoyable day of primary school hockey action

Spalding Hockey Club hosted the third of five Primary School Hockey Tournaments at Glen Park with around 130 youngsters in 15 teams from 12 local primary schools participating.

The teams were placed in three leagues – advanced, intermediate and beginner – and all matches were played in a highly competitive and sporting spirit.

In the advanced league, previously unbeaten St Norbert’s were stunned by a late goal, going down 2-1 to Ayscoughfee A.

Boosted by this early success, Ayscoughfee played some excellent hockey, going on to win their other three matches beating John Harrox (1-0), St John’s (3-0) and Boston based Tower Road (6-0) to become clear league winners.

St Norbert’s bounced back from their early setback with victories over Tower Road (4-0), John Harrox (2-0) and St John’s (4-2) to finish in second place.

In the intermediate league, Wyberton took the honours by winning all four of their games without conceding a goal.

They managed wins over Pinchbeck East (1-0), St Thomas’s (3-0), John Harrox B(1-0) and Gosberton Academy (3-0).

Pinchbeck East bagged the second spot beating Gosberton Academy (2-0), John Harrox B (3-0) and St Thomas’s (2-1).

In a closely fought beginner league, Gosberton Risegate, in only their second tournament, snatched the winning spot with the closest of margins.

They went down 2-0 to Ayscoughfee B in their opening game but found their shape to beat Surfleet Primary (2-0) and Spalding Parish (3-0) before a scoreless draw in their crucial final match against Tower Road B.

They pipped Ayscoughfee B, who had lost to Tower Road B (0-1), beaten Spalding Parish (1-0) and drawn with Surfleet Primary (1-1) by just one goal on goal difference to top the league.

Tournament four is scheduled to take place at Glen Park, Surfleet on Friday, March 16 (3.45-6pm). It is possible that there may be room for an extra team – contact Fred Morris via email at [email protected] for details.
