Ambrose admits Spalding Town “need three of four wins” to have a chance

Spalding Town skipper Rob Ambrose accepts that his side need some kind of great escape to avoid relegation from the Lincs ECB Premier League this season.

Last weekend’s heavy 121-run loss at Lindum  has left them 32 points adrift at the foot ahead of Saturday’s trip to relegation rivals Grantham (noon).

And, with just six games left to play, Ambrose admits that his side will need “three or four” wins to be safe.

Considering they’ve won just twice in 15 outings to date, the captain believes Town are currently where they deserve to be – bottom.

“They are all big games now,” said the influential skipper. “But Grantham are our rivals at the bottom, so it’s must-win really.

“I think it’ll be a very tough game, they have found a bit of form lately.

“We were missing five or six players last weekend and did what we could, but it’s the same old problem of availability hampering us again.

“To play in the Lincs ECB Premier League you need to have a fully committed side and you need to know how to win games of cricket.

“At the moment, we have neither of those attributes.

“What I will say is that the players who turn up on a Saturday have always given me their all.

“But I have to be honest – we are where we deserve to be at the moment.

“If we don’t win three or four games from now, we’ll probably go down.”

Ambrose himself misses the trip to Grantham, so Tim Norris will take charge in his absence.

Dan Milgate, Nuwan Jayasena and Warren Nel could all return for Town, but it seems unlikely that pace ace Henry Charlton will be fit to join the available again Charlie Kearns in the attack.
