After Storm Ciara, Dennis set to menace

A weather warning has been issued for Saturday after gusts of up to 78mph were reported in Holbeach last weekend as Storm Ciara hit South Holland

A host of trees were felled and homes left without power by the high winds which even caused structural damage on some properties.

This damage included the charity-run swimming pool at Whaplode Primary School losing part of its roof.

However volunteers rallied round on Sunday to put the roof back before any lasting damage was felt.

Lorraine Rous the treasurer for the charity that looks after the swimming pool, said: “A large roof panel came off in the wind

“We’re a charity run pool with a committee and basically our members’ relatives and staff all got together on Sunday afternoon and put it back.

“We’re keeping an eye on it now with the continuing windy conditions but we hope it’s fully repaired.

“We’ve got an excellent committee to help with the pool that’s used from April to October.”

Several trees also lost branches that blocked roads with members of the community helping out to get them moved.

Among the trees to fall was one on London Road that arboriculturalist Brian Ogdan had contacted The Voice about last month over concerns it had been cut back too much.

A spokesman for South Holland District Council said the tree was removed and “the area cleared to make it safe”.

Bull Lane in Long Sutton was closed for several hours due to a large tree blocking the way on Monday.

Lincs Fire and Rescue said it received 40 weather related calls, of which 17 were attended by crews and officers.

A host of homes were left without electricity with power cuts reported in parts of Spalding, Pinchbeck and Gedney Dyke.

The above-average wind speeds continued into Monday and Tuesday, with it being accompanied by a sprinkling of snow on the latter.

And things aren’t due to get much better with the Met Office warning that what they’re calling Storm Dennis is due to hit this weekend.

At the time of going to press on Wednesday a yellow weather warning for wind has been issued for 12pm on Saturday until midnight, Sunday.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Storm Dennis will bring very strong winds and potential for disruption.”
