Hussey impressed as Holbeach United reach summit with comprehensive victory

Desborough Town 0
Holbeach United 4

Holbeach United climbed to the top of the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division as they eased to a 4-0 win at Desborough Town on Saturday.

Liam Adams fired home a free-kick early on for the Tigers at Waterworks Field to force their relegation-threatened hosts to come out of their shell and attack.

That suited Holbeach down to the ground, with Jonny Lockie closing down a defender, stealing the ball and adding a second.

Michael Frew then expertly nodded home a Luke Wilson cross to make the score 3-0 at half time.

Striker Frew missed a penalty when attempting a cheeky Panenka early in the second half, before being replaced by the returning Josh Ford.

It was that man Ford who laid on the fourth goal for fellow sub Will Bird to send Holbeach a point clear at the summit ahead of Tuesday night’s fixtures.

Boss Danny Hussey, who admits to always being nervous when his side take on teams outside of the top six, was very pleased with what he saw from the men in black and yellow.

“I’m really happy with the result,” said Hussey. “It was a very good performance.

“You never know how games will pan out against teams outside of the top six, especially having drawn with them at home.

“But we got a bit of luck with a dodgy handball that allowed us to score early from a free-kick, which meant they couldn’t sit in and defend.

“We had more space to play in as a result and we always looked to have options when we were on the ball.

“Liam Adams is playing very well at the moment and it was nice to see him get a goal. Jonny Lockie’s was a good finish and Michael Frew’s header was very good, it looked to loop over the keeper in slow motion.

“It was great to see Will Bird get another goal off the bench, too. He’s really pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

“Obviously we’re happy to hit the top of the league, no matter how brief our stay is there. It shows how well we’ve been doing.”

Tigers: Drury, Wilson, T Smith, N Jackson, Fairweather, A Jackson, Tinkler, J Smith, Adams, Lockie (Bird), Frew (Ford).

Attendance: 65.
