Table tennis round-up: Spalding and District League’s year starts with Guardian Cup clashes

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League returned to action after the festive break with some Guardian Cup action.

A team competition where players play one end to 33 points, the Guardian Cup is always well-contested.

Once all the games have been completed, teams receive an envelope containing a handicap, which is awarded to one of the teams. This can drastically affect the outcome of the match.

Round one saw Outsiders play JDM’s Ashberry and T Chesworth. JDM took the match, although Outsiders received a handicap of 89 points, leaving them with a combined total of 117 against JDM’s 132.

Newside’s Quinton and Walters then played Hurricane Brothers.

The Brothers received 85 points, leaving them with a total of 177. Newside couldn’t match it, with 122 points.

Next up, Nets n Edges played South Holland’s Gilbert and White, with only half of the games being played.

Kerry played his two with Sawyer to play his, the current scores stand at 33-29 and 10-33.

Rusty Nails played a league game against Jokers (brought forward from January 28).

Nails had a pleasing couple of games against Dumitrache, both taking their respective games. Both Matthews and Hayter took it in four ends.

Briedes took both of his singles in three ends, leaving the final score down to the doubles.

Both teams fought for the point, taking it to five ends, Jokers however had just enough in them to take it and the overall score was 3-2 in their favour.

  • Visitors are welcome to come down and try out the sport at Spalding High School.

If you are interested in joining, you can email [email protected] or find the league on social media.

  • The league paid their respects prior to matches commencing for former longstanding member Phil Chandler, who recently passed away. A minute’s silence was observed by all.
