Women’s hockey round-up: Late strike puts skids on Sutton, Spalding hit for six

Long Sutton 1st were denied an East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW victory at rivals Pelicans 1st by a late goal on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Sutton were much brighter and moved into the lead when Jo Bland fired a short corner home.

Sutton then dominated the rest of the half, with the ever-willing Jemima Dodd putting in a shift and Hannah Baker filling in wherever necessary.

But, with two minutes left, Pelicans broke through and fired a leveller past keeper Lorraine Wallis to secure a draw.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 1st were handed a 6-3 reverse at Bury St Edmunds 2nd in a feisty encounter.

Goals from Ellie Holland, Charlotte Maplethorpe and Karen Timby in a frantic first half made the score 3-3.

The second period was a different story, with second-placed Bury adding three unanswered goals to give them the points.

The defeat sees Spalding fall below Sutton in the standings.

In Division 3NW, Spalding Poachers 2nd picked up a 1-0 win over Huntingdon 1st at Glen Park.

The only goal came in the second period, with Alanna (AJ) Bunyan finishing off a great team move.

Down in Division 4NW (N), Spalding Poachers 3rd went down 2-1 at high-flying March Town 1st despite Maisie Foden’s strike.

Also defeated were struggling Long Sutton 2nd, who were handed a 3-0 beating at Louth 2nd to stay in the bottom two of the standings.
