Job losses as firm goes under

Jobs have been lost as well as holiday plans cancelled after Peterborough based travel firm Thomas Cook went into liquidation this week.

Staff at the firm’s Spalding branch in Market Place are among around 9,000 thought to be left without a job after the company collapsed on Monday.

It’s also caused worry for a host of holiday makers including Jade Starkey and Ant Murphy who had booked their wedding and honeymoon in July in Cyprus through Thomas Cook.

The vast majority of their 30 guests had also booked through the company for the service.

“It’s been incredibly stressful, worrying and upsetting,” says Jade who is a sales executive at The Voice. “However thanks to our neighbour we’ve been able to re-arrange for most of our guests.”

Beka Bright of Spalding was all set for a 12-day stay in Turkey with husband Tristan and meeting friends there.

They’d booked flights and a hotel in Marmaris through Thomas Cook they were going to after visiting Fethiye.

Beka said: “We haven’t heard anything from Thomas Cook which I think is a little disappointing, as we have had to find out through social media if our hotel choice has closed, and we have had to piece together information, the communication has been terrible.

“We have had to cancel our Fethiye hotel as well, and we are trying to work out if we will be able to change or move things like airport parking to new dates.

“I am gutted about the fold, and frustrated at the fact we now have just over two weeks to find a new holiday, but I mainly just feel sorry for all the people who have lost jobs. It’s one thing to lose a holiday – but we know (hope) we can claim our money back, but for a lot of people this is their livelihood.”
