Final seaside veterans’ trip

Veterans charity fundraiser Harold Payne of Anglia Motel, Fleet, led his last fundraising parade of the year in Hunstanton last weekend.

Harold has been organising trips back to the Normandy beaches on the Anniversary of the D Day landings. This year, he thinks, will be his last.

Over the summer, Mr Payne has been taking veterans and his vintage military vehicles to Hunstanton Green for weekend fundraisers.

Event organiser Jan Whitbourn attended last weekend’s event.

She said: “When Harold runs these events a Service of Commemoration is held on the green with the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band leading the way.

“Many acts are there throughout the day entertaining the crowds, but the highlight for us was getting into the DUKW (amphibious landing craft) and entering the sea, to lay the wreaths on the sea in commemoration of D Day’s 75th anniversary.”
