Thousands head back to the 40s

Thousands of people were transported back to the 1940s last weekend as a popular event returned for another year.

Ayscoughfee Hall’s 1940s Weekend again proved a huge hit with those of all ages.

A host of re-enactors brought the period surrounding World War Two to life on both days.

The weather cleared on Sunday enough for a special Battle of Britain Memorial Flypast of a Dakota aircraft.

And Sunday ended with a poignant parade and service to mark the Victory in Japan Day.

The service conducted by Dr Peter Gorton of St Mary and St Nicolas Church was attended by the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire William Webb.

Coun Gary Taylor, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for communities and facilities said: “The 1940s weekend at Ayscoughfee never fails to deliver and this year was no exception. It was great that thousands of people came despite the changeable weather and the BBMF Dakota flypast on Sunday was a very special moment that many of us will remember.

“As always there were a great range of activities, stalls and attractions on offer and it was fantastic to see the authentic costumes, memorabilia and vehicles from the era. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along and to the volunteers, re-enactors and organisers who helped to make it happen.”
