Major roadworks around Chatterton Tower start in July

Three months of roadworks in Spalding town centre are set to begin next month as a half a million pound water main is installed from the Chatterton Tower.

Residents in and around Pennygate and Monkshouse Lane have received leaflets outlining the works.

As reported in The Voice in April, the substantial works are to increase the productivity of the Chatterton Tower.
Anglian Water say it’s to cope with the expanding population of the area.

A spokesman said: “Our teams will begin work in July to install one kilometre of new water main in Spalding.

“This work will see over half a million pounds worth of investment for the town, ensuring we’re ready as demand grows in the area.

“The work, which will begin in fields off Monkshouse Lane, before continuing onto Pennygate and finishing between Chatterton water tower and Spalding United FC, is expected to be completed by the end of September.

“We’ve already written to our customers in the area and will keep them updated as the work progresses.”

Speaking at last week’s meeting of the Spalding Town Forum, Coun Angela Newton said: “They’re going to do some works installing just over a kilometre of new water main in that area so they can pump high values of water and that’s to maintain pressure as the population in the area grows.

“That will be serving that part of town and it will have to cross the road at Monkshouse Lane to Broadway.

“There will be some road closures in the Pennygate area but they won’t close the main Bourne Road, they will do that with lights.”

Coun Newton also told the meeting that Winfrey Avenue will be closed for a period between August 5 to September 6.

She added: “The closure will also allow the new main to cross from Chatterton Tower into the football ground because apparently they need a new supplier there so that piece of road will be closed for three days, sometime between the end of September to October.”
