Top turnout at latest Spalding Golf Club’s seniors open day

Spalding Golf Club’s Seniors Open Day was once again a huge success as 160 players took to the Surfleet course on Friday.

This year, the event was contested by golfers from as far afield as Lincoln and Swaffham – while winners Brian Hall and Michael McCreery made the trip from Thorpe Wood GC.

Their score of 47 points saw them finish an impressive four points clear of Gedney Hill duo David Lord and Rob Newns (43 points).

Completing the top three were Swaffham pairing Francis Riddler and Dave Wing on 42 points.

As for Spalding golfers, Dave Fitter and Jim Dobson took top spot on countback from Ray Harrison and Richard Peck after both scored 43 points.

Rick Edwards and Brendan D’Abreo claimed third position on 42 points.

  • Spalding’s senior side enjoyed a 5.5-2.5 victory over their counterparts from Woodhall Spa last Monday.

Vice Captain Neil Wilkinson, playing with Peter Dewar, had an excellent win 5&3 win at the Surfleet course, while Jim Dobson and Trevor Chinery won handsomely 5&4.

Mark Craig and Mike Browning, in one of the first pairings, started the ball rolling for the team with a 2&1 triumph.

  • Last Sunday saw Spalding’s mixed team enjoy a 6-4 friendly victory over King’s Lynn at the Surfleet course.

Ladies’ section: A host of Spalding’s senior ladies entered for the Joan Payling Senior Handicap Cup at Sleaford Golf Club.

Of those members, Jean White enjoyed the most success as she came second (on countback) with a net 75.

  • The Spalding Ladies’ Spring AM-AM took place on Wednesday and attracted teams from 26 different clubs.

The competition was a Stableford Waltz and was played on a beautiful Surfleet course with challenging spring rough and was followed by an excellent meal.

The new half-way house was looked after by Keith and Carole Holland who served delicious cakes and savouries. A charity raffle was held and raised £364 thanks to the generous lady players and Spalding members.

The winners were Sue Taylor and Carol Thomas (Tydd St Giles) with Jane Woolard (Sutton Bridge) and Carol Hamilton (Stoke Rochford), who scored 74 points.

Second went to Lynn Exley (Gedney Hill), Maria Taylor-Vassell (Tydd), Julie Proctor and Maggie Clarkson (King’s Lynn) on 71 points.

Third place went to SooJun Letchford, Debra Godfrey, Moira Narborough and Debbie Perry (King’s Lynn) with 69 points.

Fourth was clinched by Bev Harpham, Wendy Hillson, Susan Adlam and Deb Ellis (Burghley) with 66 points, while fifth went to Sandie Streets, Helen Roscoe, Karen Parsonage and Margaret Dair (Toft) with 66 points.

An impressive 100 of the competitors entered the 2s competition and Lynn Exley (6th) and Sue Walker-Sheriff (9th) shared the winnings.

  • Spalding ladies’ B team were edged out 2.5-1.5 as they travelled to Sleaford on Friday for a league match.

Sarah Gibson and Tracy Siddle halved, Ruth Atkins and Sue Dewar won 4&3, Sue Matthews and Barbara Newcombe lost 4&3 and Sue Watson and Jean White lost 1 down.
