A wonder goal from Josh Ford extended Holbeach United’s unbeaten run in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division to nine games as they edged out dogged Desborough Town 1-0 on Saturday.
Striker Ford, who is currently being used at right back, crashed home a stunner in the closing stages of the first half at Carter’s Park to settle a very tight affair.
The strike ensured that it’s eight wins from nine league games for Danny Hussey’s side, who still have a firm grip on fourth place in the table.
The boss, who was named manager of the month for February, felt Ford’s strike was fit to win any game. But he also admitted that it was the one moment of quality in an otherwise scrappy showdown.
“We managed to scrape the win,” admitted Hussey. “If I’m honest, it was one of those games that was very low on quality.
“The pitch wasn’t great and it was almost impossible to play any good football. It was a horrible game.
“But the one moment of real quality – Fordy’s goal – was genuinely incredible and fit to win any game of football at any level.
“He came forward from right back and caught the ball on the bounce from what must have been at least 25 yards. It stayed at the same height but bent away from the keeper, what a goal.
“If he did that 1,000 times, he’d probably never hit the ball that well again.
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that, if this goal had been scored at the top level, they’d have been talking about it on Match Of The Day.
“In truth, it was the only way we were going to win the game.
“We got lucky with the wonder goal, a draw would perhaps have been the best result.
“Jonny Lockie made his first start and did really well, but we didn’t offer all that much going forward. We are looking very hard to beat at the moment, though.
“We were dogged, disciplined and defended very well. That’s all you can ask for sometimes.”
