Grave mystery at town cemetry

Investigations into a set of broken gravestones at Holbeach cemetery have proved inconclusive.

The damaged gravestones were discovered last weekend and All Saints Parish Church and Holbeach Parish Council has investigated to see whether the damage was caused by vandalism or weather conditions.

Upon discovery, the gravestones were checked by the for the parish council’s working parks and cemeteries manager for their safety and risk to others.

As no obvious sign of vandalism was apparent, the situation is being monitored and the explanation of weathering has been offered.

A parish council spokesman said: “As sandstone headstones are susceptible to weather changes its difficult to call it vandalism outright.”

The council’s chairman of cemeteries has met with Rev. Rosamund Seal of All Saints Parish Church and a safety survey is due to be carried out.
