LETTERS – Cyclists don’t use the paths

I wholeheartedly agree with the comments about the gridlock around Spalding that has seemed to have been there forever.
Obviously urgent and necessary repairs need doing, but I have concerns about the money being spent on another cycle path. Has anyone from Highways ever monitored the usage? We travel down some roads regularly that have cycle paths (West Marsh Road, West Elloe Avenue, Pinchbeck Road) and cyclists are very rarely seen on the cycle ways, indeed more use the road. A friend stopped his car to tell a cyclist on West Elloe Avenue to use the cycle path, and was met with a load of foul language and rude signs. Pedals will say their members use the cycle ways and obviously they must do, but we have seen men in full lycra and safety gear cycling on the road. We are all for road safety measures but surely if the police see a cyclist on the road when there is a cycle path available they should stop them and at least give them a warning.
Cyclists contribute nothing to the fund for road repairs etc. We have nothing against the cyclist but it should be a rule that if a cycle way is available it must be used. After all many people didn’t like using seat belts but we all do.
