Grab a trowel, the second annual Festival of Archaeology takes place this weekend at Ayscoughfee Gardens in Spalding.
On Saturday and Sunday (July 28/29), visitors can dig deep into dirt pits to unearth fossils and get hands-on with a host of activities and crafts, as well as talks, walks and demonstrations.
The first festival weekend last year was a success and co-organisers Spalding Gentlemen’s Society are going to make it a family fun event focused on local history with the theme “Archaeology in the Fens”.
Fenarch (Fenland Archaeology Society) and local U3A groups will combine forces to enlighten guests on local finds.
Activities include the popular dig-pits, the chance to try weaving, beadwork, mosaic making, brick making, tile making and the chance to try early foods such as Roman honey cake.
The Society will also organise two short walking tours on Sunday, based on John Grundy’s Plan of Spalding.
Entry is free, 10.30am-4pm both days.
Some craft activities cost, ranging from 50p to £2 per activity.
