Spalding’s young guns are up for the cup

Spalding United’s U18s will play in the FA Youth Cup next season and they’ve been handed a tasty local derby as an appetiser.

The Tulips’ young guns have been drawn against Bourne Town in the preliminary round to be played on the week commencing Monday, September 3.

The winner of that would then face an away trip to the U18s of either Grantham Town or Harborough Town in the first qualifying round.

That will take place on the week commencing Monday, September 17.

United’s development manager Lewis Thorogood is unsure as to whether the club has ever entered the competition before.

“If the club has been in the FA Youth Cup before, it’s not for a very, very long time,” he said. “Being at home to Bourne Town is a great draw.

“Playing in the cup is a great opportunity and experience for all of the players.

“It’s something I’ve experienced myself as a player and it’s a great competition where you can really test yourself.

“I’ve also worked at Bourne before and it will be a tough game but there’s also a real opportunity for the lads to progress a round or two.”

All of Spalding United’s home FA Cup ties have to be played at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field as a condition of the Tulips’ entry into the competition and will be played in midweek.

Spalding’s under 18s side are also inviting applications for an assistant coaching role. Anyone wishing to express an interest can email [email protected]
