Lucy sails to a clean sweep at Welland Yacht Club’s Novice Regatta

Lucy Burton enjoyed a clean sweep of victories in Welland Yacht Club’s Novice Regatta on Sunday.

The event is open to all members who haven’t won a standard handicap regatta or series.

The river level being on the low side and the weed growth made for an added dimension to the day’s racing.

Race one got underway with only a light breeze and two boats taking part.

Burton took the lead from Katie Follington but with personal handicaps being applied at the end of the race, it would be hard to judge who would take the win.

In a slow race, Burton held on.

In the afternoon the wind picked up slightly for race two with two more competitors joining in.

Burton again would take the early lead followed by Paul Wilson, Follington and Shelley Woolridge.

It was a position she wasn’t going to relinquish and she took the victory from Wilson with Follington third and Woolridge retiring.

For the final race the fleet was joined by Richard Stedman fresh from having just completed his RYA level 1 dinghy course and keen to put what he had learned into practice.

Once underway, with the wind picking up a little more, Burton would still get the better start while Stedman succumbed to a capsize.

Once handicaps applied Burton remained out in front from Wilson with Stedman third.

With a clean sweep Lucy Burton would take overall victory from Paul Wilson in second.

This weekend will see the club take part in the Lakeside 24hr race at Ferry Meadows Peterborough hoping to repeat last year’s overall win.
