Cricket round-up: Spalding Town stay second with narrow Grantham victory

 

Victories for Skegness and Spalding saw them stay in first and second places in the South Lincolnshire and Border League Premier Division on Saturday.

Skegness are nine points ahead but Spalding have a game in hand which they will catch up this weekend following Saturday’s 16 run victory over Grantham 2nd

Spalding could manage only 117 runs but Grantham fell short with 101 all out.

Skegness had a much higher chase, Boston 2nd notching up 213 for five, with Ben Troops hitting 80, only to see Peter Houghton score 87 to help his side to four wicket win.

Elsewhere, Welby Cavaliers continue to find life harder in the top division, losing by two wickets to Long Sutton, but Bourne 2nd score a good win over Woodhall Spa 2nd, Sleaford 2nd beat Billingborough and Freiston got the better of Stamford Town, Abdul Moeed hitting an unbeaten 80.

Division One leaders Baston’s excellent start to the season continues, Damien Herrick making a welcome return to the league with a score of 105 not out in their victory over Belton Park. 

Another century came in high scoring game at Claypole where Will Harris hit 103 for Heckington with Pritesh Patel making 67 while for the home side Kristian Lennon took five wickets.  Heckington finished on 223 in the final over before Claypole give chase with Joe Attewell hitting 60. 

But tight bowling from Liam Probert and Patel, who claimed four wickets, saw Claypole all out for 200, again in the final over.

Market Deeping stay second in the division after victory over Timberland and Graves Park – playing for the first time on their new grass pitch – inflicted a heavy defeat on Spalding 2nd in which Mitch Griffiths hit 70 and Martin Hodgson took six for 20.

The highest individual total of the day came at Long Sutton in Division Two where Jamie Taylor hit 185 for the 2nd XI against Sleaford 3rd, taking his side’s total to a massive 370-4 before Sleaford were bowled out for 141.

Long Sutton lead the division from Freiston 2nd with Boston 3rd in third place following their win over Grantham 3rd in which Rowan Evans hit an unbeaten 67.  Billingborough 2nd claimed their first win of the season over Spalding 3rd while Pinchbeck beat Belton Park 2nd by seven wickets.
