Nature reserve revamp hopes for Holbeach

Holbeach councillors are hoping shoppers will choose their cause and help improve the facilities at the town’s nature reserve.

The parish council is bidding for a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

It’s hoped the award of either £4,000, £2,000 or £1,000 will go towards improving visitor access at the Fishpond Lane nature reserve.

Planned improvements include a larger, more accessable viewing platform and new signage.

Coun Paul Foyster, Chairman of Parks for Holbeach Parish Council, said the nature reserve has historical significance in the town and should be considered part of its future.

“Fishpond Lane nature reserve has been on the Holbeach map since the late 18th Century, and is such a well-used part of the town.

“As Holbeach grows, making the area more accessible for residents is an important part of meeting their needs now and in the future, and the improvements to the floor space will see easier access for families and schools alike. The support of local shoppers at the Bags of Help will be so beneficial to making this happen,” he said.

A parish council spokesman said the reserve is a vital part of the community and home to a variety of creatures.

“The Fishpond Lane Nature Reserve started life as brick pits in the late 18th Century and was adopted by the Parish Council in the 1960s. Since then, the site has seen love from local groups and residents alike, such as Holbeach in Bloom who fill the planters along the fencing.

“Hosting lots of different wildlife including ducks and terrapins, the nature reserve has much to offer.”

Voting is open at the Holbeach Tesco store until June 30.
