Gloves off for charity boxing night in Spalding

Former world champion boxer Johnny Nelson was the guest at a charity night in Spalding at the weekend.

Now a pundit for Sky TV, he was a guest at the annual Spalding and District Round Table Premier Boxing Event.

And he even donated £1,000 towards the final amount raised – which is expected to be in excess of £10,000.

Johnny Nelson (51), is a former WBO champion, former WBF heavyweight champion and the longest-reigning cruiserweight champion of all time. He held the title from 1999 to 2005 making 13 successful defences.

Operations manager for the round table, Matt Parker, said the evening had been a great success.

There was a cheque presentation during the evening when £200 was donated to St John Ambulance.

Among items for a charity auction were gloves signed by Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton and a signed, framed photo of footballer Nobby Stiles.

Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the event and planning has already started to make it a fantastic evening.

Around 500 people attended the evening which was held at the Springfields Events Centre.
