Ladies’ hockey round-up: Long Sutton go third after firing five against promotion rivals

Five-star Long Sutton ladies’ 1st moved up to third place in the East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW table with a huge win on Saturday.

Jo Bland, Tania White, Charlie Leuty, Lisa Baker and Lyn Tancred all netted for Sutton against Cambs South 1st – who they leapfrog in the table as a result – at the Peele Leisure Centre.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 1st suffered a 3-1 defeat against Cambs Uni 2nd at Glen Park.

Despite a string of great saves from keeper Christina Dewing, the Poachers trailed 2-0 at the interval.

A slick one-two move between Karen Timby and Claire Hindmarsh saw Spalding pull one back, but the visitors rounded off their win with a third goal.

In Division 3NW, Spalding Poachers 2nd were handed a 1-0 reverse at Cambs Uni 3rd and stay sixth.

Down in Division 4NW, Spalding Poachers 3rd – who featured seven players aged just 13 – lost 3-0 against hosts Leadedenham to stay seventh, while Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd were without a fixture.
