MP joins sight issues awareness event

MP John Hayes was among a group of people who negotiated Spalding town centre with their vision impaired as part of an awareness campaign.

The MP for South Holland and The Deepings took part in the event organised by Spalding Lions.

He wore a special pair of heavily-tinted glasses and used a white stick to get a feel for some of the problems facing those who have sight issues.

South Holland Council leader Rodney Grocock also took part and used guide dog Ozzy while walking around the town centre with his eyes covered.

Saturday’s event was organised by the Lions, with a stall at the town’s market, and members of Spalding’s PHAB also took part.

“It was a lovely event and the response from everyone was amazing,” said Lions member Elaine Mothers.

“We always do something for sight awareness week, and we have the walk event every couple of years.”

The Blind Society provided a range of glasses to represent varying eye conditions for people to use while negotiating the town.
Spalding Lions are currently working on the schedule for Santa and his sleigh in early December.
