Flying the Red Ensign in Spalding for Merchant Navy Day

A special ceremony was held outside South Holland District Council offices.

Merchant Navy Day was marked in Spalding with the event at Priory Road.

Councillors, dignitaries and members of organisations including the Merchant Navy Association and Royal British Legion all saw the Red Ensign raised as a mark of respect.

The council joined a number of organisations across the country in supporting the annual initiative which is organised to honour the brave men and women who kept the country supplied during both world wars.

“It is important to recognise the vital work that our Merchant Navy seafarers do and to make sure we never forget those who served during conflicts,” said Coun Rodney Grocock.

He read a short speech from Prince Edward supporting the service before he raised the Ensign.

The day, on September 3, aims to raise awareness of the Merchant Navy.
