LETTER: Short-sighted decision on verge cutting must be reversed

As another resident of West Elloe Avenue I have to agree with Graham Petts (Voice, May 18).

Whilst in times of austerity, limited funds have to be used where they serve the majority of council tax payers most effectively this decision is very short-sighted.
It is common knowledge (broken window syndrome) that where areas are allowed to decline eventually that decline cannot be reversed.

Over recent years we have all seen Spalding turn from an attractive market town to a place which many residents would choose to leave given the opportunity and funds.
Leaving the verges untended attracts litter and does not encourage dog walkers to clear up after their animals.

Regrettably there now seems to be more and more people living here who lack the respect to keep their town or their adopted town tidy.

I live on the part of West Elloe Avenue behind the beech hedge. So far this year I have mown the visible verge opposite mine and my neighbours houses on three occasions.
I will continue to do so as long as this insane decision by Lincolnshire County Council is retained.

I am delighted to note that this approach has been adopted by others on the same stretch of road but elsewhere the verges are a disgrace to residents and visitors alike.

While I do not mind doing this, as a pensioner, I can ill afford to pay council tax and an increased electricity bill to do Lincolnshire County Council’s work for them.
It is time the council decision was reversed before it is too late.
