LETTER: Election experience gave me greater appreciation of British democracy

The excitement of the county council elections may seem to be over now. It is not so for me.

This year I stood as a candidate on behalf of the Labour Party for Spalding West electoral division. As in the 2015 district council elections, I was resolved to put up a good fight.  My party colleagues and I had clocked many miles, canvassing and leafleting. As the results were declared, I was delighted to learn that many people had voted for me. I did not win but I found the result truly humbling and encouraging.

I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, all of you who voted for me!

I am also grateful to all those who supported my nomination, encouraged and helped me throughout the campaign.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the South Holland District Council election team, whose excellent work allowed these elections to be a success.
I congratulate all the candidates who won seats in the county council.  I would also like to express my appreciation of and, indeed, thanks to all candidates for their civility and kindness shown during the campaign.

It was again a great experience, which left me with an even greater appreciation of the British democracy and the quality of our local politics.

As I have said, it is not over for me. I am delighted to have been selected as the Labour Party candidate in the General Election taking place on June 8. I am standing in these elections willing to best represent the people in our constituency and to serve our country to the best of my ability.
