Another clinical Ollie Maltby strike earned Pinchbeck United a hard-fought 1-0 win at Langtoft United in the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division on Saturday.
Maltby buried his 58th goal of the season in just 32 appearances in the 40th minute at Manor Way Sports Ground, settling an otherwise close contest.
The win keeps Pinchbeck’s title bid alive, with player/boss Ian Dunn admitting that he’ll take wins however he can get them at the business end of the season.
Dunn did, however, feel his side were full value for the victory.
“It’s always a tough place to go,” said the player/boss. “We just had to go there and get the job done.
“Langtoft are a good club and have a tough side. They’re not a bad outfit and could yet still finish in the top seven.
“In fairness to my lads, we could have scored a few more goals.
“In the first half we had plenty of attacks and I felt that we dominated for long periods.
“Their keeper pulled off a couple of really good saves, but we also just missed that finishing touch a few times.
“The goal, when it came, was typical of Ollie Maltby. Tony Edwards hit one across goal and Ollie did what Ollie does – smashing the ball into the net.
“At the stage of the season, you can’t ask for much more than a 1-0 win away from home.
“We made a few changes to keep things fresh, but still kept a clean sheet and got the result.
“We’ve got to get all of our games in before May 12, so it’s vital that we rotate and give our players a rest. We’ll almost certainly have to play on a Thursday night at some stage.
“What I would say is that the support we’ve received from the fans, even in away games, is really helping us.
“We’re very thankful for that.”
