On-song Spalding Indoor Bowls move into last four of Top Club event

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s Top Club team beat Hartlepool at York IBC on Sunday to reach the national semi-final.

They travelled to the neutral venue with hopes of reaching the finals and were faced with tough opponents in Hartlepool.

Most disciplines were close affairs, but Spalding came out on top in all of them to reach the last four.

That game will be played back at York on Saturday, April 29.

Rink scores: Ladies’ singles (Chelsea Tomlin) won 17-8; Men’s singles (Matt Whyers) won 13-11; Mixed pairs (Ruby Hill and Martin Spencer) won 16-13; Mixed triples (Scott Dunham, Annie Dunham and Matt Orrey) won 12-8; Mixed fours (Rob Simpson, Louise Catchpole, Ash Caress and Graham Smith) won 20-12.

  • Spalding IBC ‘A’ lost their latest county league match at Boston on Saturday.

They won on three rinks to take six of the 18 match points, but that wasn’t enough to win the aggregate score with Boston taking the spoils 96-79.

  • Spalding IBC’s latest over-60s county league match was away against top-of-the-table Lincoln A on Thursday.

They started well, but the strong Lincoln side got into their stride and finished well – winning on all five rinks.

Lincoln have won the division one title for the past 16 seasons and, from the 10 games played this season, they have only dropped 12 points from a maximum available of 180 – so Spalding were up against a formidable side.

The final result saw Spalding collect no points, with Lincoln pocketing all 18.

The aggregate score was also pretty emphatic, with Spalding’s haul of 57 shots dwarfed by Lincoln’s 140-shot tally.

The best performing rink was skipped by Maurice Elding ably assisted by Rob West, Jim Hammond, and Martin Hawkes.

Captain for the day was David Lunn.
