Long Sutton Athletic shot down at Warboys despite second-half Ward cracker

Player/boss Matt Cawthorn admitted Long Sutton endured an “off day” as they crashed 6-1 at Warboys Town on Saturday.

The Magpies endured a torrid first half that ended with them 4-0 down, losing Cawthorn to injury and missing a penalty through Sam Moses.

After the break they dominated for long periods and played some good stuff – including a fine 20-yard strike from Martin Ward. But Warboys added two more goals.

Cawthorn said: “It was a disappointing result away to a title contender.

“We travelled with a weakened squad and a couple of lads carrying a few niggles.

“We’re lacking consistency at the moment. It’s becoming hard to get a settled side.

“I’m scratching my head to how slight mistakes from us always get punished. Maybe I set the targets too high and have to become more realistic in our aim.

“A disappointing day ended with Luke Nicholson picking up a nasty looking injury after a disgusting two-footed challenge from their forward. We hope that’s not too serious.

“It was an off day for the team but we move on.”
