A developer proposing homes on the site of empty industrial units in Park Lane, Donington, is to be asked to reconsider the design.
South Holland District Council’s planning committee deferred a decision on the Calderdale Homes application over concerns that a proposed rear parking court could attract anti-social behaviour.
Chairman Roger Gambba-Jones said: “I have experience of these parking courts and none of it is good. This parking court is designed to cram as much on the site as possible. It could be done better.”
The application sought permission for seven two-bed and two three-bed dwellings on land currently occupied by industrial lock up units and a garage, between Milson’s Close and 2 Gleed Avenue.
The development proposed to provide off-street parking for residents and visitors in a courtyard style car park.
A spokesman for the applicant told a planning committee meeting on January 4 that the design would “certainly not result in an area susceptible to crime or the fear of crime.”
He added: “Redesigning the layout and siting dwellings further back to provide parking on each plot would result in a significant reduction in dwellings on site, create a poor street scene and more worryingly result in housing layout driven by misplaced perception of inconvenience and on-street parking.”
He said the homes were intended to be affordable and, ironically, would likely appeal to people who did not own a car.
