Ben’s a Shore thing to fire Long Sutton to big victory over city rivals CoP 3rd

A hat-trick from Ben Shore inspired Long Sutton 1st to a five-star victory at CoP 3rd in East Men’s Hockey League Division One on Saturday.

Visitors Sutton started like a house on fire against the basement boys and went 3-0 to the good through Will Cook, Shore and Gary Hales.

However, the Sutton tide abated pre-half time and Peterborough landed two goals to make things interesting.

Sutton played their best hockey of the game in the second period and Shore duly added two more goals to clinch his treble and a 5-2 victory.

However, Long Sutton 2nd had a day to forget against CoP 4th in Division 3NW, going down 10-1 at the Peele Leisure Centre.

Vice captain Luke Jackson got the only goal for a depleted Sutton side, with the hard-working Sam Gray at least doing enough to merit the player of the match prize.

Down in Division 6NW (N), Long Sutton 3rd were handed a 4-0 reverse by table-topping Spalding 4th (more details, right), but remain fifth in the standings.

In the same division, ten-man Long Sutton 4th put in a strong showing against Wisbech 4th before succumbing 3-1.

Indeed, a shock looked on when Harry Braginton and Will Taylor carved out an opening for Adam Sisson to make it 1-0 at half time.

But they couldn’t hold on and slipped to a sixth loss from seven.

Meanwhile, Long Sutton ladies’ 1st suffered a 2-1 defeat against Cambs City 3rd in East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW.

There was little to choose between the sides and Sutton were unfortunate to find themselves 2-0 down.

Lyn Tancred scored a cracker in the closing stages, but it was too little, too late for them.

The in-form Charlene Leuty was handed the player of the match prize in that clash.

In Division 4NW (N), Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd drew 2-2 at March Town.

Sutton twice led through Millie Lamming and Georgina Synott, but they were pegged back on each occasion.

Keeper Emily Braginton had a fantastic game between the posts for Sutton and was duly named player of the match.
