It was a good week for title-chasing Long Sutton in Spalding and District Billiards League as they took advantage of a slip up from the leaders to move within striking distance.
Magic Mick Cooper (O150) shone for Sutton in their 7-0 beating of Holbeach A, making a super break of 74 and smaller offerings of 45, 26, 25 and 21 in the opening frame.
That was against fellow big hitter Hugh Pinner (O140), who did manage breaks of 49 and 25 himself.
Joe Garland (R70) then edged out Alan Yardley (R10) – who made a 23 break – 200-197 in the second frame to clinch the victory for Sutton.
Adam Barwell (O50) ensured the hosts took maximum points by defeating Des Forbes (R50) in the finale, making breaks of 33, 24, 22 and 20 in the process.
Sutton are now just three points behind leaders Holbeach C with two games in hand.
That’s because the table-toppers slipped to a 5-2 defeat at fourth-placed Donington, who are now level on points with Sutton.
Dennis Hix (R70) won the first frame for Holbeach C, but Ben Wrigglesworth (R70) and Jim Thompson (R30) hit back to give hosts Donington the points.
Elsewhere, Gosberton B won 5-2 at Consti D to make it four wins from six league games.
Shane White (O20) made three breaks in the 20s as he won frame one for Gosberton, but Jason Rose (R30) sank a 35 break to help Consti level the match in frame two.
James Waterfall (R80) then beat Mick Peet (R110) to clinch it for the visitors.
Also 5-2 winners were Pyramid B, who won at Gosberton A with Martin O’Connor (R10) pocketing a 21 break.
