Lucky escape for mother and pups

A dog who escaped death row and the next day unexpectedly gave birth to two pups is looking for a new home in South Holland.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Lucky was on that day’s “put to sleep” list at the pound when she was saved from a very sad ending by the team at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

She was taken to the East Yorkshire Centre and upon arrival had quite enlarged nipples. She was quite thin and there wasn’t any milk to suggest she had recently had puppies.

The following day Lucky started behaving strangely – she was digging quite frantically and displaying clear nesting behaviour.

Centre manager Blake Coghill, who lives on the site, said: “We noticed this behaviour and moved her to our isolation kennel block, where we put dogs that are either unwell or finding kennel life a bit stressful.

“We also booked her in at the vets first thing Monday for a check-up to give us a clearer picture of her health.

“I was at home with my dogs in the evening when they started to become very agitated.

“I went out to check on the dogs and was greeted warmly by Lucky displaying two new puppies!

“Without our urgent intervention Lucky would have been put to sleep that Friday at the pound and those puppies would never have been born, now three dogs can go on to eventually be rehomed into loving families and give them a second chance at happiness.”

Lucky and her two female pups, Hope and Glory, were immediately put into a foster home in Cambridge, with a Jerry Green fosterer who has a lot of experience with new puppies and all three dogs are doing well.

They will be available for rehoming under the care of Jerry Green’s South Lincolnshire Centre in Algarkirk in about eight weeks’ time.

Contact the centre on 01205 260546 or [email protected] for more details on rehoming Lucky, Hope and Glory.
