Find out about Holbeach heritage at open events

Two Holbeach landmarks will be open to the public this weekend as part of the Natural Lincolnshire Heritage Open Day Festival.

There will be a rare chance to explore Holbeach’s hidden Cold War bunker.

Heritage Lincolnshire will be running free guided tours on Sunday, with booking essential to avoid disappointment.

Visitors will be able to put on a hard hat and descend the ladder into a recent but almost forgotten chapter in the county’s history.

There will be displays about the site and the work of the Royal Observer Corps volunteers who used it to monitor in case of nuclear attack.

Many of the original instruments and equipment they used have survived and will be available for visitors to see.

There will even be the chance to have a go with a real air raid siren!

Visitors will also have the opportunity to speak to one of the local volunteers who manned the post during the Cold War, and to find out what it was like working underground.

The magnificent and historically important twin Victorian Chapels, lying at the heart of Holbeach Cemetery will be open to the public on Saturday from 10am-4pm.

The Holbeach Cemetery Chapels Trust will be hosting a range of free activities that include Lincolnshire’s only Gamelan Orchestra, refreshments, old photographic displays, activities for children and the launch of a cemetery trail created around the cemetery and chapels that will provide the opportunity to learn more about local history and the environment, whilst also providing a forum for reminiscing about Holbeach families.

Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee.

To book your place for either event call Heritage Lincolnshire on 01529 461499 or email [email protected].
